Integrity Infusion Pump

What if you could save someone’s life by making it easier to care for them? The objective for this project was to create a user-friendly infusion pump for nurses and thereby make them safer for patients.

Needle Holder

I have always been curious about how surgeries and how they are done and what types of tools they use. With this in mind I decided to observe surgeons and find ways to improve the tools that they use.

Objectives

  • Find challenges in the surgical experience for plastic surgeons through observation

  • Create concepts to improve their surgical experience

Methodology

  • Rapid ethnography of process, from patient check-in through patient check-out

Opportunity

  • Needle holders are not ergonomic

Observations

  • Needle holders were antiquated

  • Needle holders were not used ergonomically which could lead to carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Eyelets were not used to open and close the clamping mechanism

  • Suturing required a balance of strength and accuracy

  • Handles and eyelets of holders did not accommodate repetitive motions

  • Current device could potentially lead to fatigue or injury

Models

  • Developed forms to alleviate potential injury that the device might cause

  • Found that increasing the surface area made the handles more comfortable

  • Reduced fatigue by adding easy ratcheting latch to require less strength

Peritoneal Dialysis

Kidney failure is not a laughing matter. There is an alternative form of dialysis that allows patients that have kidney challenges to utilize their peritoneum to filter out the toxins in their body. With this in mind I designed these devices for the home and to look friendly and approachable.
