Situation

Quality issues led to weaker sales, resulting in 0% repeat purchases
Profit margins were below 30%
Seven year old aging product line
Project was two months behind schedule
Objective
Develop a modular platform of three different ride-on machines that exceed our customers needs in cleaning their different floor types
Research
Facilitated and scheduled field observation and discussion with 15 different customers in two months time
Generated quantitative survey to prioritize needs and synthesized them into actionable insights
Pain Points
Components required tools to clean them leading to poor performance
Chemicals would damage pump
Control panel was complicated and confusing
Serviceability of machines was low, and cost customers double the expected service hours
Initial machine quality was poor
Positives
Ergonomics of the stand-on platform were comfortable Maneuverability of machine was great
Thought Process
How can we eliminate the need for tools when used daily? How can we eliminate the need for a pump?
Make it unique and beautiful
We developed the Brand language to be used throughout the product line to drive a consistent and recognizable family.
We created sketches and form studies to find the right balance of being approachable yet durable to the end customers.
We developed the icons, logos, color schemes and warning labels to ensure that the design was unique and beautiful in all details.
